英語にも動物を使ったり、比ゆ的な表現を使ったりしておもしろい言い方をすることがあります。例えば、

１　That was a wild goose chase.

２　Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.

３　The system is a sacred cow in the country.

などですね。

１は無駄足だったときに使う言葉です。例えば、I went to lots of book stores to find the book, but it turned out the book is out of print.  That was a wild goose chase, you know.

２はAlthough the gift may not be the very thing you have wanted, don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. It’s free of chage anyway. 　など、貰ったものにはけちをつけるなということ。

３はA sacred cow means a custom, system, etc. that has existed for a long time and that many people think should not be questioned or criticized. ということで、「聖域」ということです。

こういった表現を覚えて会話の中でさりげなく使えるようになりましょう！
