ある電気製品量販店のポイントを使って、Ｋ社の電子単語カードを買ってみた。手書きでコツコツ作っていた単語カードを、電子化してしまったという商品である。使用してみた感想。(Ｋ社からお金はもらっておりません。Ｋ社の人、これを見たら宣伝費ください。)

よい点

①シャッフル機能がよい。単語を登録された順番ではなく、ランダムに表示する機能だが、全くランダムに単語を選ぶのではなく、同じ単語が繰り返し出てきて、再確認できるようになっている。

②今までに他の英語単語学習ソフトを買ったことがあるが、スペリングを打ち込んだり、単語の意味を３つの候補から選んだりするという面倒な作業があり、長続きしなかった。この単語カードは、ただ画面をながめていればいいだけというところが気に入った。（英単語を表示して、しばらくしてからその日本語の意味を自動的に表示するという機能あり。）

悪い点

①画面が暗くて読みにくい。

②上に書いた日本語の意味を自動的に表示する機能を使って画面をただながめていると、ひとりでに電源が切れてしまう。電源がひとりでに切れてしまう前に、操作をする必要がある。

総じて、私の評価は合格点だが、これから購入される方は、上に書いた欠点が改良され、バージョンアップされたものをお勧めする。（改良版発売予定かどうかは不明。）ぜひ改良版を発売してほしい。

My Dream

When I was at senior high school, I decided to become a teacher, but the reason must seem very strange.

My history teacher was not a human being. He was a machine in humane shape. He wrote meaningless words on a blackboard automatically and told things without content. I didn’t listen to his lecture because it was boring. I believed (and still believe) that history was the most interesting of all the subjects I had at school. But why could his lecture make me so completely fed up? I thought I could teach history better than him. This belief made me a history teacher.

However, when I became a teacher I had to face up the severe reality. Of course I was interested in history and my belief that history was the most intriguing subject hadn’t changed. But students didn’t show any interest in it. Some students were just sitting in my class reluctantly; otherwise, they couldn’t have finished school. Their attitude to my class discouraged me.

I taught Japanese at schools in Australia and Canada. One of the things which impressed me was this: when I was in Canada I went to elementary school as an assistant Japanese teacher. There I found pictures of students in old times displayed on the wall. Some graduates might go to the school occasionally to recollect old times and they would find they are still there!

My dream school will be a place where teachers can teach their subject freely. They talk to their students from heart (not like a machine), and they raise good citizens who always think about politics, economy, peace keeping, welfare and so on and who try to make our world better.

It will be also a place where students can enjoy their school life, where graduates receive a hearty welcome, and where they can look back on their old days longingly when they come back to school.

百人一首の英訳を紹介します。

“Ogura Hyakunin Isshu” is an ancient anthology of one hundred tanka,
Japanese poem of thirty-one syllables, by one hundred poets.

きみがため　おしからざりし　いのちさえ　ながくもがなと　おもいけるかな
I didn’t used to be afraid of losing my life for you, but now I love you so
dearly that I would rather live long with you.

わすれじの　ゆくすえまでは　かたければ　きょうをかぎりの　いのちともがな
You promised me that you would love me forever but it is not guaranteed because human mind changes easily. I would rather die today when I’m happiest.

みせばやな　おじまのあまの　そでだにも　ぬれにぞぬれし　いろはかわらず
I’d like to show you my sleeves. Their colour has changed with my tears
because I always miss you and can’t stop shedding tears. Even fishermen’s sleeves in Ojima never change their colour though they get wetter and wetter.

さびしさに　やどをたちいでて　ながむれば　いずこもおなじ　あきのゆうぐれ
One day in autumn I left home at sunset time in too much loneliness and
looked around, only to find there was loneliness everywhere.

英訳する場合、歌の裏に隠された読み手の心情も説明しないと理解できないので、どうしても長い文になってしまいます。もっと簡潔な英文にまとめられるのかもしれませんが、これだけの心情をたった31文字におさめた短歌というのはすごいと思います。

食品の産地や賞味期限の偽装が問題になることがたびたびあるが、英語の本にも偽装がまかり通っているようだ。その例として、某出版社から出ているＴＯＥＩＣ単語集の話。例文にネイティヴのチェックが入っていると書いてあるが、とてもそうは思えない。epigram(警句)という語の例文として、

He delivered an epigram for an entry to the U.S. market.

彼は米国市場参入に対して警句を発した。

という英文と日本語訳が載せてあった。おそらく著者は「警句」を「警告の言葉」という意味に受け取っているものと思われるが、そうではなく、警句とは「短い形で物の真理を鋭くついた言葉」の意味である。この著者、英語の勉強より先に、もう少し日本語の勉強をした方がいい(他にも英語の勉強より、日本語の勉強をした方がよさそうな人がいるようですが…)。語の意味を取り違えていては、当然間違った例文で、私の知り合いのネイティヴに念のため聞いてみても(聞く必要もないが)、誤った例文だという。この本は他にも怪しい例文だらけである。

そのことをメールで指摘すると返信があり、次の版から改めるとのことで、訂正した例文も添えてきた。その例文も私の知り合いに見てもらったが、これまた変な例文だという。困ったものである。

以下、正しい例文。

It is often very effective in concluding an essay to quote a succinct epigram from a great author to highlight one’s main point.

エッセイをしめくくるとき，主題となる部分を際立たせるためには、偉大な作家の簡潔な警句を引用するのが、しばしば非常に効果的である。
